8th Grade Survival Guide

It's almost here- the end of 8th grade! I want you to create an 8th grade survival guide for the students that will take your place next year.

Part I: Leave a comment for this post (classwork grade). Discuss how this year has been for you. What have you learned that sticks out to you? What life lessons will you take away from your time here at Windsor Middle School?

Part II: Open a Word document and type a letter to a current 7th grader. Explain to them what 8th grade was like for you and what it will be like for them.
Then, create a booklet of pictures, terms, quotes, and advice for the 8th graders to survive the 2010-2011 school year (at least 10-15 entries). This should be fun and creative. This will also be a quiz grade. When you are finished, e-mail yourself or me what you have done so far and I will save it in drop i.o for you to access later. My e-mail address is marquitahockaday@gmail.com

Have fun with this!

  3. This year has been great I've had the best teachers that anybody could ask for. I've learned a lot in my years of middle school from civics all the way to algebra. Such as slope-intercept form or even what's a x or y-intercept. I think one thing that people can take away from being in middle school is that if you be quiet and pay attention more things can be very easy and to not act out in class.

  4. This was a good year for my first year in WMS. i liked most of my classes and teachers. When i move on next year i will take everything i learned this year in class along with new friends.

  5. i loved this school year cause all of my teachers (except math) were really cool and interesting. i learned this year that you usually have really caring teachers that need you to stay awake in class in order to learn! don't take Mrs .ironmongers jokes to heart she is really just kidding

  6. I learned that you shouldn't hang out with the wrong crowd and you just need to pay attention and do your work and my life lessons are that if you try and try you will succeed

  7. Daniel & Austin- being quiet is very important! Glad that you guys learned that.

Alyssa- Be kind to all of your teachers- we are here to help you and make you a better student and person. I am glad that you loved this school year!

Matt- It's good that you enjoyed your first year here at WMS- you are a great student and I am glad that I got to meet you this year.

Robert- Let's work on the spelling a little bit :) But it's good that you learned about the economy. That is a great lesson that you can take with you for life.

  8. Jerry- beautiful response! I will miss you when you go to the high school. You always make me laugh!

  9. This year has been GREAT for me. I had the best teachers and awesome friends. What sticks out to me is that every class is easy if u do the work and not be lazy. A life lesson i will take from WMS is if u put the effort and time into you work u will suceed and pass.

  10. My 8th grade year has been pretty good. I have pretty much liked all of my teachers but my algebra teacher really just had a hard time with my class. I never really asked for help in his class because I didn't want him to fuss at me. So if you get a teacher like that just bear with them. I have learned a lot in all of my classes. I liked my civics class because my teacher always planned fun things for us to do for our lessons. One thing that sticks out is how to stimulate the economy and how to slow it down, I'm pretty sure I know how that works now.:) I will be leaving middle school with many things that I thought I couldn't learn. Just be sure to always turn in your work and do your homework, and try not to get yourself involved in drama!

This school year went by really fast for me. I learned that Civics was easier than what people told me it would be. It is very important to get on the good side of teachers so that if you do something wrong, it is less likely that you get in trouble for it. It may be tough dealing with all the drama but it's important to keep up with all the work so you don't fall behind in class. This is what i have learned this year.

    Love, Michelle Brianna :)

  12. Zach- great comment! And you are very right, if you just TRY then it is possible to succeed here at WMS.

Bobbi- WOW! Great comments and very well written too. You give good advice for dealing with sticky situations and I am soooo glad that you enjoyed Civics. I know it's not the most fun subject, but I try and make it be interesting. Also, thanks for advising students not to get involved in drama! And I am also very glad that you understand how to stimulate and slow down the economy. Maybe one day you can work for the FED.

Michelle- Civics is really easy! I am glad that you realized that :) And this school year did kind of fly by didn't it? I will miss you all :(

  13. Raynesha Blow,
I've really enjoyed this school year. I've had the most awesome civics teacher ever ! lol . I'm going to miss her next year. I've learned a lot this year, but I think learning about the laws and government will stick out the most because, for 1 i don't want to be in jail for disobeying the laws, and 2 i need to know that i can have my voice heard in congress and that i can influence what laws are made. Thank you for being an excellent teacher. For the first time since i can remember, this class has actually been easy! (:

  14. I really dont know what to say. Sometimes in this school year i regret a lot of things that i have done or havent got a chance to do. But overall this school year was great, not as good as 7th grade year though.

  15. I think that this year was a very interesting year. I've learned to go with the flow. I have also learned to do my best on everything I do. I will try to stay away from the wrong people and go with the ones I know will help me get through the next four years. :) Thank you, Ms. Hockaday, for everything you've done for me! :)

  16. This year has been amazing , & I am sad that I have to leave. I have really loved this class, and hope to come out with a good grade at the end of the year. I love this class so much not just because your teaching it but also because just the way you teach and comprehend hard things to make them easier to understand. We play games, and go over and over and over the work. One thing that sticks out to me over the whole year is about the vocab words in economy and also about the beginning of career is you have to think and test your self with career assesment. Ms.Hockaday please come to the high school with us !
    thanks again for everything !

  17. This year has been beyond AMAZING! Like, I can't even describe it. It went by way too fast for me. This 8th grade year has been pretty crazy too..like so so so soooo much DRAMA! But, I fought through it. One thing that I learned is that you have to stay focused on your work and study. Another thing that I learned was don't do things because your friends do it. That was a major lesson!!! I'm definitely going to miss you and WMS next year:( I don't think I'm ready to leave just yet. The lesson I'll take with me is...never talk back to your algebra teacher! lol..haha. But, I'm really going to miss it here!

  18. i have learned that if you do what your told things will be easier on you. and that civics is fun!!

Iv learned soooooo much! too

  20. my school year has been very enjoyable and i think it is mostly because of the great teachers i have(except maybe math!). I am going to miss all my great teachers next year. the thing that will probably stick with me the most is first amendment freedoms because that way i can know what all my freedoms are and what i can and cant do! I will miss you so much next year.

  21. Raynesha- thanks for saying so many kind words :) And I am so glad that you are going to take away those lessons from Civics- it seems like someone was listening to me this year! Thanks :)

Megan- Thank you for being a great students and putting forth an effort.

Jessica- I would LOVE to come to the high school with you all- and I will miss you too :) I know that you will do well at WHS though. Just never forget me! I am glad that you remember economics and career assessments. And I am glad that I helped to break down the information for you- I try :)

Summer- I am proud of you for trying to stay out of drama. I know how hard that can be at your age, believe me :)And I am glad that you learned to not talk back to your teachers- great lesson!

Morgan- I am so glad that you think I am that nice and kind- sometimes I feel like I'm being a little harsh, but I guess it's tough love, right? And WMS will miss you :)

Maddie- I am really going to miss you :) You are such a sweetheart and a WONDERFUL student! I hope you stay as sweet as ever and good luck at WHS.

This year was fun, I met alot of people and one thing that all yall rising 8th grader need to know is....... DON'T DO YOUR HOMEWORK IN MS.IRONMONGERS CLASS!!!!!!!! She will take it away and show the teacher that assigned you the homework that you were doing their homework during homeroom.
    P.S., Good Luck

  26. In 8th grade it is full of drama! If you hang around the wrong group many people may hate you.. and if you do something wrong it will reflect back to you. so try to avoid that! friends are the best! I could always count on them! so make GREAT friends that you could always lean on if you need them and also be a god friend too! well have fun!!!!!!! :)

  31. I learn that civics is pretty easy but not all that interstin. Our teacher tryes to make it fun but dosent do to good! But some times shes does a pretty good job. Mrs.Ironmonger will talk you away and make ur ears hurt! But she likes to joke so thats good. Mr.Barnes who teaches science and learning science Kinda dont get it! but hes pretty interrestin.Mrs Adams has a pretty good class. Its really hard but she does a good job. But she loves joking around so thats pretty much 8th grade good luck

  32. Okay so ths year 8th grade has been the hardest.
i have had a lot of struggles in civics and English class. But still at the end i did learn some stuff and the struggles wasn't because the teachers it was because i had a lot of problems remembering stuff. i appreciate how we had review before Sol that helped a lot specially in civics. So i advice u to look over your notes if you have a hard time remembering stuff. Also Miss Hockaday is the best.

I have had a good year. I learned that you get the best teachers in 8th grade. I leaned that civics is easier than it seems.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ive learned that 8th grade is harder than you think you may be doing good in one class and doing bad in another but to good in all your classes you must work hard

    ReplyDelete
  35. This year has been the best(: ! it makes me sad thinking about how far i have come , and leaving middle school behind. looking back i've made alot of good changes.
advice ? , from me is just do your best, dont stop trying untill you achieve your goal. AVOID! drama or any thing that can get you into "trouble" and you'll make it.
this last year for me went by so fast which is a good and bad thing.I'm so ready for high school but im going to miss SOME!(: people .
at first i thought school was horrible. but i learned to actually pay attention and set high goals for my self which i've reached and thats what made 8th grade so great, along with Mrs.H my civics teacher. she made this last year great. & yeah buddy i sure wont forget this year and having memories about it is the good thing.for rising 8th graders out there good luck(: baybay

  47. I've had a really good three years here. It seems longer though. I mean ever since my older sister came here, it feels like I've known all of these teachers a pretty good while. My years at WMS have been the best yet. I will miss my band teacher, gym teachers, staff(i love you mom!) and my core class teachers like Ms.Hockaday, Mr.Barnes, Ms.Cussick and Ms.Adams. It's hard to believe I am leaving but I have learned alot and I think something I will take with me is that it doesn't matter what anyone says about you but to forget all the mean comments and move on because it doesnt matter what anyone thinks of you. Keep your head held high and listen in class you will succeed.

  50. This year has been good because all of the teachers are nice. I have learned that you must try hard if you want to be sucsecfull and that is one of the life learned lessons tht I have learned here at WMS.I have learned that the only way to survive 8th grade is just to do wat you are asked and it will be easy to pass and it will keep you out of trouble. But the best teacher here at this school is Mrs. Hockaday because she has put up with more stuff than any of the teachers put together. Thanks for a great year Ms. Hockaday.. ( CHRIS HARRIS)

This year has been an amazing year for me!!! I'm so proud of my grades this year. The thing I learned this year thet will stick with me forever is that friends are so special and importnat and that the best ones will stand by you and always forgive you because they love you!! Windsor Middle school has taught me that even if your shool is old and not pretty, looks arent what counts! Our shcool has amazing people and motives behind it that I love and my be hard to see at first but are and will always remain! Thanks Ms. Hockaday! Your been the best!

  56. This year was mostly cool i mean ya there was mad drama but u cant really get away from that. other than that it was good eighth grade was definitely harder than i thought it would be but it was fun and i'm just ready to get out of this place.

  58. this year has been amazing for me. I learned a lot of things in really every subject. I made in by in civics which was hard at time but im not scared to ask you questions which is a big problem I have in school, when I have a question I will keep it in and then never know. I'm glad I had you has my homeroom teacher I had prayed and prayed I would be. My favorite teachers this year have been you and Mr.Barnes. I know i have a great head start on high school by taking Alg. 1 in middle school and by having great teachers. I know I will cry on the last day of school and be sad that I will be leaving but I will be happy to say I had the best teachers like EVER. this year was fun and went by slow sometimes and sometimes to fast. Its time for us to leave and do one of the biggest things in our lives, go to high school. I know that I will graduate and the people and friends I love might not but I'm sure that 85% at the least in this class will make it on to collage.

    ReplyDelete
  59. My school year terrible,... just playing. It was great. I learned that civics is fun and easy, and that I improved in civics. I know to be quite in class and stop talking to my friends. Hopefully High School wil term out better!!!:)

  60. This year has been one of the most amazing years I've had. One that has been emotional, fun, and exciting all at once. My teachers have been amazing and I've learned not only educational lessons but life lessons as well. Mr. Barnes has showed me to be thankful for the things we have and enjoy the time we have with the people we love while they're here. Ms. Hockaday has taught me to not judge people so quickly, she has been my teacher and one of my best friends. Mrs. Ironmonger has taught me to stay on task and be as organized as possible. My experience with Mr. Utt has been pretty.. Rocky. We have our good moments. He is a good person who really does try. All he wants is just 20 minutes of our attention. Educationally, I have learned about so much. I loved my civics class and learning about our government. The court system has stuck out most to me. Thank you Miss Hockaday for everything you have done and taught me this year! we all love you so much!
    Love,
    Leah Wright

    I'll miss you!!!!
